Private conformity, public conformity and self-direction relationships.

Abstract

The relationships among private conformity, public conformity and self-direction were examined in a questionnaire survey (N = 137) and a two-persons conversation experiment (N = 21). All participants were university students. The questionnaire showed that high self-direction was weakly associated with low private conformity and moderately associated with low public conformity. The experiment did not show an association between self-direction and both conformity.
