Abstract

Mobile vision aid applications that convert visual information into text have become essential for individuals with vision impairments. However, their design remains insufficiently explored, particularly through qualitative evaluations that capture actual user needs, leading to suboptimal user experience. This study qualitatively assesses the usability of vision aid apps and identifies key requirements of blind and low-vision (BLV) individuals. Using observations and focus group interviews (FGIs), we collected responses from 8 BLV participants in Korea as they performed daily activities with two vision aid apps: Seeing AI (Microsoft, USA) and Sullivan+ (TUAT, Korea). Thematic analysis revealed three key themes: context-dependent information quantity, user agency and control in interaction, time-efficient workflow and rapid recognition. This study provides valuable insights for the user-centered design of mobile vision aid applications, emphasizing the importance of empirical research in assistive technology development.
