Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the appropriate number of round indicators on a console where they were arranged side by side.
The verval response time in reading each indicator was compared between different numbers of indicators.
The mean response time of six subjects increased smoothly from 1.17sec for a single indicator up to 1.52sec for seven indicators.
The t-test concerning the difference in mean response time gave the results that the difference between the two-and three-indicator displays or that between the four-and five-indicator displays was not significant. The difference in respnose time between five and six indicators and that between six and seven indicators were highly significant.
These results suggest that the display of an even number of indicators is easier to read than that of an odd number of indicators, and that the number of round indicators arranged side by side should not be more than five.
