Abstract

We report a 9-year-old girl with hypothalamic hamartoma (HH) whose symptoms improved by the stereotactic radiofrequency ablation (SRA) . The patient developed epilepsy at three years of age. She had gelastic seizures, various types of complex partial seizures, which were not controlled by any anticonvulsant. At the age of 5 years and 10 months, she was diagnosed with HH. She had precocious puberty and mental retardation. Precocious puberty was controlled with the gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog. Her seizures were intractable to conventional antiepileptic drugs and gamma knife surgery underwent at the age of 6 years and 6 months. At the age of 8 years and 10 months, she underwent SRA, which resulted in immediate and remarkable seizure remission without complication and her mental function improved. This suggests that SRA is useful and safety technique for HH.
