Abstract
In this paper, the writer investigated the characters of three typical forest soils in the Tokyo University Forest, Hokkaido.
1. Tairazawa soil (350m above sea level).
A ground water soil under the stand of Fraxinus Mandshurica. The soil is near neutral in reaktion and rich in exchangeable bases, and so not leached. Soil as this type will be called “Fraxinus-type soil.”
2. Suika-Toge soil (450 above sea level).
An example of soil types developed under stands of Abies sachalinesis (mainly, mixed with hard wood). This “Abies-type soil” is characterized as follows;
pH and the content of exchangeable bases are lower than in previous soil type, and colloidal materials are slightly accumulated in the B horizon.
3. Okudaira soil (680m above sea level).
Vegetation of Picea jezoensis, Betula Ermanii and some of Abies sach. in higher altitude regions in Forest. The character of so-called “Picea-type soil” as this is summerized as follows;
Rusty spots in upper part of the B horizon, lowest pH value in the A, bases strongly leached, and accumulation of colloidal materials in the B.
