Abstract
An experimental study was performed for the purpose of determining the effect of lateral displacements of a retaining wall on the distribution of lateral pressures against the wall by granular noncohesive backfills.
Tests were made with two kinds of flexible vertical walls, one was 100cm wide and 150cm long and the other 150cm wide and 150cm long. The sand backfills had a horizontal surface. The lateral earth pressures and the amount of lateral displacements of the walls were measured.
It has been found that the measured values of lateral pressures of soil are in satisfactory agreement with the theoretical values obtained by means of the Dubrova's method of computing earth pressures.
