The buds of 2-year-old seedlings of Kurile larch (Gk; Larix gmelinii (RUPR.) RUPR. var. japonica (REG.) PILGER) were grafted onto the top shoots of 3-step grafts combined in the order of L (2-year-old seedlings)+L+Gk (L: Japanese larch: Larix kaempferi (LAMB.) CARR.). With separation of the clones into two classes of great (g) and little (l) ability for flower setting, and expressing the combination of the classes of scions (buds) and stock in each step with the figures of scion /stock, the degree of flower setting was in the order of g/g>g/l>l/g>l/l. This means that the budded ramets set flowers under the influence of the flower setting ability of the scion clone at first and then, to some extent, of the stock clone ; and, when adult trees with great flower setting ability are used as stock, the budded ramets on them almost, simultaneously begin to set female strobili without regard to the age of the bud suppliers at the time of budding. However, on immature stock or that with little such ability, the ramets of mature scion suppliers and of clones with great flower setting ability generally set flowers earlier.
