Abstract
We report a case of esophageal mixed type carcinoma of neuroendocrine carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma treated with surgery and neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy. A 51-year-old man with a complaint of dysphagia was admitted to our hospital. Histological findings of the biopsy specimens revealed tumor cells which were stained for CD56, chromogranin A and synaptophysin, and this tumor was diagnosed as poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus with partial components of neuroendocrine carcinoma (LtAe, type2, cT3, cN2, cM0, cStage III). Two courses of neoadjuvant chemotherapy with fluorouracil (5-FU) and cisplatin (CDDP) followed by thoracic esophagectomy with three-field lymph node dissection and posterior mediastinal reconstruction via a gastric tube was performed. Immunohistological staining revealed the tumor to be neuroendocrine carcinoma with a component of poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (CT-pT2, pN1, CT-pStageII, grade: 1a). Two courses of adjuvant chemotherapy with 5-FU and CDDP following surgery were additionally given and the patient remains alive without recurrence 54 months after the surgery.
