Abstract
We report a relatively rare case of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) originating in the esophagus. A 61-year-old woman referred for dysphagia suspected of involving esophageal constriction was found in endscopic examination to have a submucosal tumor of the lower thoracic esophagus. CT and MRI showed a solid tumor 6cm in diameter, suggesting liomyoma originating in the esophagus. Six month later, when she had been reduced to a liquid diet, we extirpated the 70×70mm. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells were positive for ckit and CD3 and negative for desmin, S-100, α-SMA, and vimentin. The definitive diagnosis was esophageal GIST. The tumor size suggested had low-grade malignancy.
