New Zealand has faced serious economic deterioration since 1970's. New Zealand Government had to embark itself in changing its administrative structure to deal with its economic problems in 1980'. The restructuring by the Government has been called the “New Public Management” of the New Zealand model. The reform of the health sector that started dramatically in 1990's had a big influence from the leading restructuring, “New Public Management” in 1980'. Actually the main reform of the health sector was corporatization of public hospitals that had a based on concepts and frames of the reform of “New Public Management”. This article reviews the economic situation of New Zealand in 1970's and 1980's to the beginning and then analyzes characteristics of the New Zealand model of “New Public Management”. And also the characteristics and the environment of the reform of health sector in New Zealand are pointed out. Finally with evaluating a consequence of the adaptation of “New Public Management” to the health sector, it is shown what we can learn from the New Zealand experience.
