Abstract
In our division resection is the standard treatment for all stages of carcinoma of the tongue. The clinical data on 241 patients with previously untreated carcinoma of the tongue were reviewed. The 5-year overall survival rate was 66.8%. The 5-year overall survival rate by stage was 88.7% in Stage I, 75.5% in Stage II, 54.6% in Stage III, and 34.4% in Stage IV. The 5-year local control rate was 81.6%. The postoperative cervical metastasis rate was 29.5%. It was considered that complete resection of the deep portion of the tumor may improve the local control rate and the survival rate. In addittion, a study on the levels of neck dissection, pathological positive cervical metastasis, and postoperative cervical metastasis will be worth conducting.
