The present study reports the identification of a newly recorded species, Gymnopus densilamellatus, in Japan, along with descriptions and illustrations of its morphological characteristics based on specimens collected from Niigata Prefecture. This species is characterized by very crowded lamellae, strong garlic-like smell, and two-color types of basidiomata that are roughly whitish or brownish. Maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood analyses of the nuclear rDNA ITS region revealed that Japanese and Korean specimens of G. densilamellatus consist of a clade, suggesting that G. densilamellatus probably distributes continuously in the Korean Peninsula to the Japanese Archipelago.
