The present study reports the new record of Russula lakhanpalii in Japan, based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses of the specimens collected in Aomori Prefecture. The fruiting bodies of these specimens were characterized by yellowish-brown pileus, very crowded and frequently forked lamellae, context negative with FeSO4, and metachromatic pileipellis in cresyl blue. A maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree of nuclear rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences showed the specimens in Japan comprising a monophyletic clade with R. lakhanpalii of India and China.
