Abstract

The extracurricular activity of participating in a concert band plays a critical role as a starting point for the musical involvement of amateur musicians. This study investigates the impact of concert band activity on the development of amateur musicians’ music-related hobbies, including playing instruments and attending classical music concerts. A survey was conducted of individuals who had participated in concert band activities during their school years, focusing on the activity situation of school concert bands, the continuation of musical activity after graduation, and the frequency of attendance at concerts by professional and amateur musical groups. The study found that 73% of participants did not continue concert band activities after graduating from junior high school, while 78% of those who had previously participated in musical activities no longer played an instrument. In contrast, low concert visit frequency was found to be attributed to external factors such as time and geography. Despite being only exploratory research based on descriptive statistics due to the sample size, this report highlights the need for a further empirical study on the importance of concert band activity participation in the development of amateur musicians.
