Purpose: The aim of the study is to systematically map research on the mental health effects of major earthquakes on general workers and identify research challenges.
Method: PubMed and Medline were searched using keywords related to major earthquakes and workers for a scoping review of original articles published since 1969. Data extracted from the literature included author name/year/country, paper title, research objectives, research methods, study design, study population (sample size), occupation (employment status, etc.), earthquake name, disaster damage at home and in the workplace, and mental health impacts.
Results: Six papers were included in the review. The mental health impacts of major earthquakes on workers included insomnia, depression, and irritability. Findings were obtained for the association between PTSD symptoms and the extent of damage to housing, and between mental health and the presence of support persons. However, few studies included questions about the work environment, and there were few reports that could be utilized to consider required measures in the workplace. Therefore, further research is needed, including analyses that incorporate the work environment and longitudinal studies.
