Abstract
We reported a case of aplastic anemia who responded to cyclosporine A (CyA) treatment dependently for his remission. This 21-year-old male was diagnosed as having moderate aplastic anemia at 10 years old. He was treated with metenolone and high-dose methylprednisolone. However, he did not respond well. Additionally he had to be given multiple red blood cell transfusions. At the age of 18 years old, CyA treatment was started and he responded well. With cessation of CyA treatment, relapse occurred twice. Following these episodes, he has received CyA treatment on alternate days so as to decrease side effects and cost. His hemoglobin level has been stabilized at about 14 grams per deciliter. He has not been transfused for more than 3.5 years. These results suggested that alternate-day CyA treatment was effective for CyA-dependent cases with aplastic anemia.
