The purpose of this study was to evaluate the transmission of a diode laser through the dentin. Ten dentin disks of 1 mm in thickness were obtained from five extracted human molars. The surfaces of five disks were parallel to the long axis of the tooth, and the other five were perpendicular. The transmission of a diode laser through the dentin discs was measured by a power meter.
The laser transmission ratio varied between 0.049 and 0.216. The laser transmission was affected by the orientation of the dentinal tubules of the dentin disks.
