Grasping a hand dynamometer at a predetermined level (4.7kg) was employed as the task of voluntary activity. Knee-jerk was employed as the reflex activity, the measuring method being described in the previous report (Yamamoto, 1974).
In the experimental condition, the grasping task continued for 24sec, intermediated three stimulations for knee-jerk at 3, 8, and 19sec after the starting point. Moreover, the fourth stimulation was presented at 5sec after the end of grasping period. The session was repeated 5 times, intermediated 36sec rest period.
The knee-jerk response under no voluntary activity was measured (control condition for reflexive activity). The grasping response under no reflexive activity was measured (control condition for voluntary activity).
As the results of grasping task, the analysis of variance of the grasping response amplitude indicated that the response for the experimental condition was more deviated from the predetermined level than that for the control condition. More detailed inspection of the data showed clearly that grasping strength fell down for 1 or 2sec after the stimulation was presented, without any changes at the moment of stimulation, and then recovered its base level rapidly. This phenomenon was named the after-reflex-inhibition for the voluntary activity.
Amplitude of knee-jerk response for the experimental condition increased during the grasping period and decreased after it. Amplitude of the first knee-jerk response was the largest in the experimental condition. On the other hand, amplitude of the third response increased in the control condition.
These interactions between voluntary and reflexive activities were interpretated in terms of the attention.
