This irregularity in reaction time is to some extent caused by occasional “blockings”. Until now the phenomenon of blocking has been discussed in connection with fatigue and sometimes with physiological process. However, in this paper, the phenomenon of blocking is investigated on the viewpoint that blocking is rather a positive adjusting process of psychological mechanism than a negative and escaping process.
Experiments are conducted to investigate the mechanism of the occurrence of blocking, examining such items of blockings in a serial performance as frequency, occurring position, positional relation to other observations, length, and the relation to the periodical reaction time delay.
One-hundred and eleven students served as subjects (seventy for experimental group and forty-one for control group). Measurements of serial reaction time, irregularity of the speed of performance, the frequency and position of blockings, corrections, errors, omissions and repetitions are made on simple color naming (comparatively easy task) and competitive color naming (complicated task).
The major finding were as follows:
1. Some blockings were observed even in the comparatively easy task performance but corrections and errors were few. The frequency of blockings, the number of corrections and errors, the length of serial reaction time, and irregularity in speed were all increased in the complicated task performance.
2. More blockings were observed in the later stage of performance than in the earlier stage.
3. Some blockings were observed between errors and the following corrections.
4. Periodical delay in reaction time including blockings was observed at every fifth or tenth naming.
5. Long blockings were not so frequent and occurred without any particular tendencies.
These findings support the author's viewpoint that blocking is the manifestation of a rather positive adjusting function of the psychological mechanism.
