Date of correction: July 16, 2010 Reason for correction: - Correction: ABSTRACT Details: Wrong : The effects of different disparities, which existed in the same stereograms, on the global stereopsis were examined by using thirteen complex ambiguous stereograms. A common characteristic of these stereograms was that one of the two possible modes of perception was double planes consisting of two different disparities and the other was a single plane consisting of only one disparity. The cumulative time for each modes of perception was measured for a period of 90 seconds with eight subjects.
The major findings were as follows:
1. As the number of boundaries between two different disparities increased, the time of perception of double planes decreased. This result suggested that the detection of the two different disparities might mutually be inhibited because of the difference in disparities.
2. As the spatial separations between the boundaries of different disparities decreased, the perception of double planes decreased. The mutual inhibition of disparity detection between different disparities might become stronger as the spatial separation between the two different disparities became smaller.
3. As the difference between disparities increased, the perception of double planes decreased even with small component disparities. The large difference in disparity might interfere with global stereopsis.
These results were also discussed in relation to the inter-relationships among noise, magnitude of disparity and the difference of disparities, or factors which were considered to influence global stereopsis.
4. With simple ambiguous stereograms, a depth produced by relatively small disparity was generally perceived for a longer period, but when this pattern of smaller disparity was mixed with 4% noise, the depth was perceived for a shorter period. This fact suggested that the effect of the magnitude of disparity might be reduced by noise.
5. Based on the results of the stimulus conditions mentioned above, two patterns of disparities were paired in an ambiguous stereogram, one had a single disparity and was mixed with 4% noise and the other had two different disparities with 19 boundaries. It was found that the depth produced by different disparities, which had been perceived for a longer period than the depth by a single disparity mixed with 4% noise when they were tested in separate ambiguous stereograms, was also perceived for a longer period in the combined stereogram. Namely, the order of perceptibilities found in independent measurements was maintained in this situation.
The results described above suggest that factors such as the difference of disparities, noise and the absolute magnitude of disparity exert influences on the same stage of processing for the generation of global stereopsis, and that these factors should be taken into consideration for constructing a model of global stereopsis.
