Abstract

Chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapy is a novel treatment for relapsed or refractory hematologic malignancies. Since its insurance approval in 2019, the range of eligible diseases and patient age groups has expanded, and the number of treatment centers has increased, resulting in a rapid increase in the number of patients undergoing this treatment in Japan. Patients undergoing CAR-T cell therapy often have a long history of prior treatments (such as chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation), which may result in decreased physical function prior to treatment initiation. In addition, cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS), which occur after infusion, can have severe effects on both physical and cognitive function. This review provides an overview of the role of rehabilitation in CAR-T cell therapy based on current evidence.
