Abstract
Six patients with infarcts of the corona radiata adjacent to the body of the lateral ventricle were investigated with Brunnstrom stage, Barthel index and MRI. Wallerian degeneration seen on MRI was more severe in patients who had larger lesions and poorer recovery from paresis of the extremities, particularly in the upper limbs.
Among patients with lesions of the same size and same prognosis, Wallerian degeneration was more prominent in those cases which showed more severe symptoms at the acute stage. The relationship between the degree of physical recovery and severity of Wallerian degeneration were discussed.
