Abstract
Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) was used to evaluate intellectual functions in 15 patients with severe brain injury. The attention was focused to subtests in WAIS-R. In order to assess the significance of intellectual abilities on daily living, we adopted the memory and problem solving subscales of the Functional Independence Measure (FIM). The results are as follows: 1. The mean scores and standard deviations of the verbal IQ (VIQ), performance IQ (PIQ) and full scale IQ (FIQ) were 87.2 (±20.39), 65.0 (±15.39) and 75.7 (±17.27). 2. Compared with normal subjects, selective impairment was found in Information, Arithmetic, Similarities, Picture Completion, Picture Arrangement, Block Design, Object Assembly, Digit Symbol. 3. The memory and problem solving subscales of the (FIM) were significantly correlated with the Picture Arrangement and Block Design and Arithmetic in subtests of WAIS-R. It seems likely that the analysis of the subcomponents of the complex skills assessed by the WAIS-R will provide better diagnostic tests and the Picture Arrangement, Block Design and Arithmetic are useful prognostic Subtests that provide informations in an individual's cognitive skills.
