Abstract
A 73-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with severe abdominal pain. A contrast-enhanced CT scan of the abdomen showed a "whirl sign" in the small intestine loops around the superior mesenteric artery and intestinal tumor. The patient was diagnosed as volvulus of the small intestine and underwent surgery. At laparotomy, the small intestine were twisted 720° clockwise around the superior mesenteric artery. A tumor, about 5 cm in diameter, was found in the jejunum about 1 m 30 cm from the Treiz' ligament. Partial resection of the small intestine involving the tumor was carried out. The histopathological diagnosis was low-grade malignancy gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) of the small intestine. GIST of the small intestine associated with small bowel volvulus is a rare disease.
