Abstract
We report a case of duodenal cancer mimicking a laterally spreading tumor (LST) of the colon.
A 53-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of right hypochondralgia and fever in August 2006. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, abdominal CT scan and upper gastrointestinal series revealed a duodenal tumor 8cm in diameter with multiple nodules. The diagnosis obtained by a biopsy was duodenal adenocarcinoma. Pancreaticoduodenectomy was performed, because the tumor invasion to submucosa was suspected by endoscopic ultrasonography. Few cases have been reported on duodenal cancer mimicking a LST in Japan. Treatments employed for the duodenal tumor mimicking a LST included endoscopic resection, local resection of the duodenum, and pancreticoduodenectomy. It is difficult to asses the depth of invasion of duodenal cancer mimiking a LST before surgery. The adequate selection of operative procedures must be considered carefully.
