Abstract
A 78-year-old woman with a past history of right spontaneous pneumothorax for three times was referred to our hospital because of relapse of right spontaneous pneumothorax in December 2006. Empyema occurred during the treatment by chest tube drainage, and surgery was carried out on the 14th hospital day. Because she developed superficial SSI associated with MRSA, we started povidone iodine sterilization with the infected wound opened. Despite the treatment for 26 days, the wound was not disinfected. Povidone iodine was replaced with 0.1% gentian violet and then the wound was cleaned with negative culture for MRSA 2 days after administration without any adverse events. Gentian violet disinfectant might be useful for the treatment of SSI associated with MRSA.
