A case of an inflammatory pseudotumor developed from an artificial anus

Abstract

The patient was a 71-year-old man who underwent abdominoperineal resection for rectal cancer in June 1994. He had been followed by periodic examinations and had had no signs of relapse until July 2005, when he became aware frequent bleeding from the artificial anus. Then he noticed a 1.5 cm sized submucosal tumor with granulated submucosal aberration at the same region in April 2006. He underwent enucleation of the tumor in May 2006, and pathological studies showed severe inflammatory cellular infiltration and a nodular tumor in the submucosa. There were no neoplastic changes and thus inflammatory pseudotumor was diagnosed.
We etiologically consider that continuous lavage of the colon every other day after the operation might cause the development of the pseudotumor.
Inflammatory pseudotumors developed from the colon are very rare and there have been no reports on inflammatory pseudotumors developed from an artificial anus so far.
