Abstract
We report a case of hemangioma of the small intestine that was diagnosed preoperatively. A 69-year-old man, who had had colon cancer surgery, was found to be anemic. The focus of bleeding was not found on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy or colonoscopy. Therefore, the small intestine was examined. Small intestinal bleeding was seen on video capsule endoscopy (VCE). The focus of the small intestinal bleeding was found to be a small intestinal tumor on double ballon endoscopy (DBE) ; this point was marked using India ink. The small intestine was partially excised. The resected specimen was about 5-mm. The histopathological diagnosis was hemangioma of the small intestine. It is difficult to diagnose the cause of small intestinal bleeding due to the anatomical characteristics of the small intestine. Angiography and scintigraphy have been usually used, but they cannot detect a bleeding point if the amount of bleeding is small. We were able to preoperatively diagnose the bleeding point on small intestine endoscopy. In the future, VCE and DBE should be used to reliably identify the source of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding.
