Abstract
We report a case of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma with infectious spondylitis. A 72-year-old man was admitted due to fever and back pain that developed during rheumatoid arthritis treatment. The patient had worked at a waste treatment center. It was suspected that the patient had been exposed to asbestos. On examination, the patient had back pain and a right lower abdominal mass. Computed tomography showed pleural plaque, thickening of the thoracic vertebrae, and an abdominal mass. The patient was diagnosed as having infectious spondylitis of the thoracic vertebrae and an abdominal tumor. He was at first treated with antibiotics, to deal with the infectious spondylitis. Over five months, the abdominal tumor was found to have grown. Therefore, a laparotomy was done. A tumor originating in the omentum and two disseminated nodules were found ; all were resected. On pathology, malignant peritoneal mesothelioma was diagnosed.
