Abstract
Asymptomatic liver cysts are common clinical entities that do not usually require treatment. We experienced 2 cases of infected liver cyst in patients who had undergone pylorus-preserving pancreatoduodenectomy (PpPD) for pancreatic tumors. Both patients were successfully managed with antibiotics and percutaneous transhepatic drainage. In both cases, infection of liver cysts may have been caused by the reconstruction of the biliary tree, which suggests that the condition may be a postoperative complication of surgery for the reconstruction of the biliary tree. Bilioenteric anastomosis following PpPD may cause infection of preexisting liver cysts, thereby leading to the development of potentially fatal liver abscesses. Every physician in charge of postoperative follow-up of patients with liver cysts should be well aware of this complication.
