Abstract
A 79-year-old woman, was referred to our hospital for further examination of early gastric cancer, and underwent a laparoscope-assisted distal gastrectomy (LADG). On the fourth postoperative day, an upper gastrointestinal series showed a dilation of the upper jejunum, but she was considered to have paralytic ileus caused by surgery, so fasting was continued until the seventh postoperative day. She started to complain nausea and vomiting after meals on the tenth postoperative day. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a bowel obstruction due to incarceration of the small intestine at the site of the 12 mm port incision in the left middle abdomen. An urgent operation under diagnosis of port-site hernia was performed. During surgery, incarcerated jejunum was observed at the port-site and a partial resection of the jejunum was performed because it was damaged. She had an uneventful postoperative course and was discharged from the hospital 14 days after re-operation. Port-site hernia after laparoscope-assisted gastrectomy is a rare complication, but we should pay attention to the possibility when we observe postoperative bowel obstruction, and promptly make a diagnosis in case surgery is required.
