Abstract
Anemia was detected in a 42-year-old male, and he was referred for investigations. Blood tests showed only a mild anemia. Endoscopic examination revealed a tumor in the appediceal orifice. The endoscopic biopsies showed no malignancy (group 2). Endoscopic mucosal resection was impossible because the tumor could not be seen clearly. Therefore, a laparoscopic partial resection of the cecum was performed. The resected specimen showed a polyp prolapsing from a vermiform appendix. The head of the pedunculated polyp measured 15×10 mm. Histological examination of the polyp showed no malignant hyperplasia of the mucosa ; however, a tree-like extension of the smooth muscle bundles was noted. The polyp was diagnosed as a Peutz-Jeghers polyp of the appendix, which is very rare, with only eight cases reported in the Japanese literature. Moreover, there are only very few reported cases with no mucocutaneous pigmentation or family history.
