Abstract
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the breast is believed to arise from metaplasia of ductal carcinoma cells. Here we describe a case of pure SCC of the breast which had a propable origin from an epidermal cyst.
A 79-year-old woman presented with a 3-cm palpable mass in her left breast. Mammography showed a spiculated mass. Ultrasonography showed a low echoic mass with irregular border. Contrast-enhanced MRI showed an irregular shaped mass which contained a central unenhanced area suggestive of necrosis. A core biopsy diagnosis was SCC of the breast. Breast-conserving surgery with axillary lymph nodes dissection was performed. The histological diagnosis was SCC, because of complete absence of adenocarcinoma component. An epidermal cyst, containing horn materials, was seen in the central portion of the tumor. A possible role of the epidermal cyst in the origin of SCC of the breast has been suggested.
