Abstract
A 49-year-old man was seen at the hospital because of the abrupt onset of right lower abdominal pain and swelling of the right inguinal region at the end of February 2012. Following close exploration, the patient was operated on with a diagnosis of right inguinal hernia at the beginning of March 2012. Opening of the inguinal canal disclosed that the appendix had been impacted in the hernia sac. Amyand's hernia was thus diagnosed. The hernia type was diagnosed as type I-1 according to the Japan Hernia Society Classification, and then appendectomy and hernia repair by using the ULTRAPRO Hernia System were performed. The patient soon improved and was discharged from the hospital on the second postoperative day. Thereafter he has not been associated with any infections of the surgical wound.
Amyand's hernia which contains the appendix as the content of inguinal hernia is rare and few cases of this type of hernia have been reported in Japan. We present this case of Amyand's hernia, together with a review of the domestic 36 cases.
