Abstract
A man in his thirties visited our hospital because of epigastric and back pain. CT scan of the abdomen showed a mass about 3cm in diameter, which was enhanced heterogeneously on the left side of the abdominal aorta. Duodenal GIST or neurogenic tumor was suspected, and tumorectomy was performed. During surgery, palpation of the tumor caused an increase in the systolic blood pressure to 160 mmHg, and a Ca blocker was effective for the control of blood pressure. The tumor was capsulated and a nerve flowed into the dorsal surface of the tumor. The pathological diagnosis was paraganglioma of the retroperitoneum. He had a good postoperative course and was discharged on the postoperative day 6. Like in this case, asymptomatic paraganglioma may be difficult to diagnose. Para-aortic area is a favorite site for paraganglioma. When we detect a para-aortic tumor, we should take paraganglioma into consideration.
