Abstract
The oncological safety and validity of oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery (OBCS) have not been established as yet, especially for Japanese women. We performed a retrospective analysis about OBCS using volume displacement technique (d-OBCS), which had little case accumulation in Japan.
A total of 120 patients with breast cancer who were treated with d-OBCS between June 2009 and December 2011 were enrolled in this study. The median size of the tumors and the median weight of the resected specimens were 25 mm and 71 g, respectively. The rate of positive margins was 14.2%, and the rate of complications was 13.3%, all of which were minor and could be treated conservatively.
Although the median follow-up period was not long enough (26 months), no local recurrences were noted. This d-OBCS could increase both the adaptable tumor size and the specimen volume without worsening the rates of positive margins and complications. This analysis suggested that d-OBCS could safely contribute to expansion of BCS indications also in Japanese women.
