Abstract
Amyloidosis is a disease characterized by extracellular deposits of amyloid protein that affects the systemic organs and resultantly causes impairment of the tissue and organs involved. This time we experienced a case of primary amyloidosis localized in the rectum.
A 53-year-old man who had been aware protrusion of a hemorrhoid since about five years earlier was found having a SMT like hard tumor in the rectum as well as internal and external hemorrhoids of grade 3 by a digital examination. Magnetic resonance imaging visualized it as a tumorous lesion 20 mm in diameter at the rectum Rb. Colonoscopy showed an irregular ridging lesion within the anal canal. The tumor was removed under lumber anesthesia. Histopathology of the tumor showed no atypism in the epithelial components, and the tumor formed by amyloid deposits was thus diagnosed.
In treating amyloidosis, the gastrointestinal organs are believed to be the common sites of amyloid deposits, but such cases as amyloid deposits localized in the rectum form a tumor have rarely been reported. This rare case is presented here with some bibliographic comments.
