Abstract
Transomental hernia is a rare disease in a kind of intra-abdominal hernia. This disease lacks specific physical features, making-preoperative diagnosis difficult. From 2010 to 2013, we encountered six cases of transomental hernia in which a multidetector computed tomography (MD-CT) scan was helpful for the preoperative diagnosis. Patients were from 58 to 83 years old (average : 65.3 years old), and the male-to-female ratio was 5 to 1.
MD-CT scans showed the dilated small intestine on the ventral side of the transverse colon, closed loop, and the convergence of a mesentery or the small intestine. MD-CT scan with multiplanar reformations (MPR) is useful for the diagnosis of transomental hernia. The possibility of transomental hernia should be considered when treating patients with an obstruction who have no history of laparotomy.
