Abstract
Purpose : In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the outcome of emergency tension-free hernia repair using mesh for incarcerated groin hernias.
Methods : We conducted a retrospective study of patients who underwent emergency hernia repair for incarcerated groin hernias between 2001 and 2012.
Results : In total, 94 patients (55 with inguinal hernias and 39 with femoral hernias) underwent emergency surgery. Patients were divided into two groups : group A (23 patients ; hernia repair with bowel resection) and group B (71 patients ; hernia repair without bowel resection). We evaluated the difference in the background and outcomes between patients who underwent tension-free mesh repair and conventional repair. Among the group A patients, 2 patients, who underwent conventional repair and bowel resection due to bowel perforation, developed surgical-wound infections. No major complications or recurrences occurred in any of the patients.
Conclusion : Tension-free hernia repair with using mesh can be safely employed in incarcerated inguinal hernia surgery without any complications. Moreover, even in cases without any bowel perforation, tension-free mesh repair may be useful if bowel resection is needed.
