Abstract
We report a case of a 74-year-old man with recto-sigmoid colon cancer presented with brain metastasis. He was detected to have a brain tumor by CT performed for a decline of orientation before admission. The brain tumor was extracted and was diagnosed as metastasis from colon cancer by pathological examination. Close exploration revealed a 3-cm diameter tumor at the sigmoid colon. After the whole brain was irradiated, he underwent low anterior resection. Adjuvant chemotherapy was not given to the patient, because he did not hope and his performance status was 2. Brain recurrence occurred twice four months and seven months after the operation, respectively, which enforced γ knife therapy. No recurrence involving other organs has occurred for 13 months up to now. Because the metastasis to the brain of colon cancer is often accompanied with other remote metastasis, it carries poor prognosis. As shown in this case, γ knife therapy is beneficial for solitary brain metastasis of colon cancer.
