Abstract
We report a case of laparoscopic repair of a Morgagni hernia in an 88-year-old woman. She was hospitalized on and off because of vomiting due to a Morgagni hernia with gastric volvulus. In each occurrence volvulus was reduced spontaneously by a nasogastric tube and she became asymptomatic. However, because it gradually became more frequent, laparoscopic surgery was performed. The hernia orifice behind the sternum was found to be about 6 × 3 cm. The hernia orifice was closed by subcutaneous extraperitoneal closure and Paritex Composite Mesh® was placed over the closed diaphragm. The postoperative course was uneventful, and she was discharged on the ninth postoperative day. No recurrence was seen in the 12 months since the surgery. We consider that laparoscopic repair of a Morgagni hernia is a safe and useful procedure, and mesh repair reduces the risk of recurrence.
