Abstract
A 48-year-old asymptomatic man was incidentally found to have an abdominal mass on abdominal CT. The diameter of the mass increased from 12 cm to 19 cm over a period of 7 months. We suspected of malignant tumor and carried out surgical resection of the mass. The mass was a smooth, elastic-hard tumor arising from the sigmoid mesocolon involving the nearby marginal artery. Therefore, we performed sigmoidectomy including the mass. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen revealed a desmoplastic fibroblastoma, composed of collagenous fibers and spindle-shaped fibroblasts. This disease has been reported to arise from the deep subcutaneous tissue, fascia, aponeurosis or skeletal muscle ; it has rarely been reported to arise from the abdomen. There is another case report from Japan, of the tumor originating from the stomach. It is important to discriminate between DF and desmoid tumor, although we could only discriminate between the two by histopathology. DF rarely recurs after surgical resection. We report the case of a 48-year-old male patient with DF, that had not recurred yet as at the time of writing.
