Abstract
We describe an unusual traumatic abdominal wall hernia for which laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) surgery was performed. A 71-year-old man had been involved in a traffic accident, and his sigmoid colon was perforated. Emergency sigmoidectomy was performed at another hospital. Several months later, he noticed a bulge in his right flank and thus visited our outpatient clinic. A soft-ball-sized bulge in the patient's right flank was confirmed, and an abdominal computed tomography showed a defect of the right abdominal oblique muscle through which the ileum had herniated. Traumatic abdominal wall hernia was diagnosed, and a laparoscopic TAPP repair was performed. This repair was done about 11 months after the initial surgery. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient was discharged from our hospital on the post-operative day 8. There have been no signs of recurrence. The case described herein, including the laparoscopic procedure, represents a rare application of the TAPP approach.
