Abstract
A 34-year-old-woman was diagnosed with a tumor, 100×80×80 mm, in the retroperitoneal space on magnetic resonance imaging at a neighboring clinic and was referred to our hospital. After further examination, we found that the tumor was derived from the right iliopsoas muscle and involved many lumbar vessels. She also had many metastatic lung nodules. We embolized the main supplying arteries of the tumor by transcatheter arterial embolization a day before surgery. We attempted complete removal of the tumor, but many lumbar vessels and nerves were involved ; we feared she would never walk again if we cut the lumbar nerves, so we only performed a biopsy. We diagnosed the tumor as an alveolar soft-part sarcoma by pathological examination. After biopsy, we treated her with chemotherapy, using pazopanib and sunitinib, and the tumor decreased in size, at least temporarily. Complete removal was performed in another highly specialized hospital. Alveolar soft-part sarcoma is a rare tumor, especially when occurring on the trunk, so we report our experience with a review of the literature.
