Abstract
We report a very rare case of lymphangioma attributed to childbirth in a 37-year-old woman. At 2 years after cesarean delivery of her third baby, the woman presented with acute abdominal pain and was admitted for further examination. She reported having become increasingly aware of a palpable mass in the lower abdomen since a little after the birth of her child. On admission, abdominal CT showed a mesenteric lesion measuring 14 cm in diameter, and exploratory laparotomy was performed. The mass was located in the mesentery of the jejunum, about 30 cm from the treitz ligament, and involved the intestinal tract and the jejunum arteries. Therefore, resection was performed en bloc together with the involved small bowel segment. The histopathological diagnosis of the resected lesion was lymphangioma of the jejunal mesentery. Since no abdominal tumor was detected during the pregnancy, it was speculated that the lymphangioma was caused by the pregnancy and childbirth. A lymphangioma related to pregnancy and childbirth is very rare, with only two other cases reported to date in Japan. We report this case with some discussion of the relevant literature.
