Abstract
Since approval of meshes for ventral incisional hernia (VIH) repair in Japan in February 2011, the use of meshes in VIH repair has increased. Laparoscopic surgery for VIH repair has increased, but the techniques used vary among medical centers. We began using multi-incision laparoscopic surgery (MILS) in May 2014 and single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) in August 2014 for VIH repair. To date, MILS has been performed in 7 patients, with SILS in 6 patients.
No postoperative complications or recurrences have occurred, and postoperative hospital stays have been shortened, both with MILS and SILS. Compared to an anterior approach, SILS is expected to reduce the incidence of postoperative complications and recurrence and to shorten postoperative hospital stays. Although further evaluation in a larger number of cases is required, SILS may be a useful procedure for VIH repair.
