Abstract
A 20-year-old woman was evaluated for a chief complaint of abdominal pain and vomiting. An upper GI series and computed tomography (CT) showed a diaphragmatic hernia and gastric volvulus. Laparoscopy showed a Bochdalek hernia (BH) with firm adhesions of the spleen and hernia orifice. The procedure was converted to hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery (HALS), and the adhesions were safely dissected. The protruding organ was reduced, and the hernia orifice was closed by suturing.
The patient's sister, who was an identical twin, had a BH as a newborn that was surgically repaired. This case of HALS repair of an adult BH in a patient with a family history of BH is reported.
