Abstract
A 48-year-old man with no history of laparotomy presented to our hospital with abdominal pain. Physical examination showed localized tenderness in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen. Abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed a localized small bowel dilation caudal and lateral to the cecum, and the proximal side of the small intestine was dilated. No ischemic signs were found in the entire small intestine. He was diagnosed with a paracecal hernia, and laparoscopic surgery was performed 5 hours after onset. On exploring the abdominal cavity, a loop of small intestine was found ingrown lateral to the cecum. The blood flow of the intestine was not impaired, so there was no need for resection. The hernia orifice was formed of a membrane between the cecum and peritoneum. The orifice was incised and opened completely. The patient's postoperative course was uneventful, and he was discharged on postoperative day 2 without any complications. Abdominal computed tomography was useful for making the diagnosis of paracecal hernia. Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive and useful treatment for paracecal hernia.
