Abstract

Adenomyoepithelioma of the breast is a rare from of breast tumor. Although it is basically classified as benign, cases have been reported in which local recurrence and distant metastasis occurred despite the resected specimen having been diagnosed as benign adenomyoma. The case of a patient with adenomyoepithelioma of the breast with suspected nipple and skin invasion is reported. An 80-year-old woman presented with a lump in her right breast and abnormal discharge from the right nipple. There was a palpable lump with a maximum diameter of 5.2 cm in the right breast BDE region, and nipple retraction and reddening and edema of the skin were also present. Mammography showed a clearly demarcated, smooth, lobulated hyperdense mass, with skin thickening and nipple retraction. Ultrasound showed a clearly demarcated, rough, lobulated, hypoechoic mass with a cystoid internal structure. Adenomyoepithelioma of the breast was diagnosed on the basis of needle biopsy, but total mastectomy was performed because skin and nipple invasion could not be entirely excluded. The pathological diagnosis of the resected specimen did not show infiltration of the skin by tumor cells or inflammatory cells, leading to the conclusion that this was a case of benign adenomyoepithelioma with hemorrhage of its cystoid internal structure and subcutaneous hematoma formation.
