Abstract

A 70-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of a left breast tumor on mammography at a medical checkup. A lobulated mass measuring about 10 mm in size was present in the AE area of the left breast. The pathological diagnosis of the core needle biopsy specimen was adenomyoepithelioma. One year later, the left breast tumor grew rapidly up to the size of about 10 cm. Therefore, tumorectomy was performed under general anesthesia for diagnosis. Histopathology revealed that squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) might arise from squamous metaplasia in the adenomyoepithelioma. Local recurrence developed about 2 months after the operation, so salvage mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection were performed. The histopathological diagnosis was local recurrence of SCC, and the dissected lymph nodes revealed no evidence of metastasis. The patient received postoperative radiation therapy (50Gy/25fr) and four courses of chemotherapy (epirubicin + cyclophosphamide). The patient has been free from recurrence for about 6 months.

SCC of the breast is rare, and the prognosis is not so good. No unified view about prognosis and standard therapy has been obtained so far. We need to establish an effective therapy for SCC of the breast.
